carved frieze-rail, painted stone-colour, whichnow stands in the tower. Of the monuments, the most interesting is the half-length brass of Walter Davy, Vicar, usually assignedto c. 1420. It is about two-thirds life size, and is set ina slab of blue Sussex marble, 4ft. 6in. by 2ft. 3m.,and represents a tonsured priest, clean shaven, withhands joined in prayer, vested in albe, amice withembroidered collar, chasuble and maniple. The sleevesof the albe have embroidered parures at the wrists.Beneath is the inscription :— trie facet bne XKHalterus 2)a\>£ qubamWear* eccle be polpng cm ate ppriet, beu\ The half-effigy measures 20m. by 11 fin., and theinscription-plate, llfin. by 2Jin. A blue marble slab in the chancel has the followinginscription, in mixed Roman caps and smalls :— M. S. Hie iACET Thoma(sBROdNAX GenerosusHuius Ecclesi^ UICARIUS. qui OBIIT 17 diE Aug. annoDoNI 1679 .etatis Sum 36 A triangle is scratched on the lower part of the slab; POLING AND THE KNIGHTS HOSPITALLERS.

90 POLING AND THE KNIGHTS HOSPITALLERS. On the north of the altar is a Sussex marble slab,bearing a coat of arms, and inscribed to RobertDunham, Vicar, 1706. Another, plain, on the southside, 5ft. 6in. by 2ft. 6in., may be the mediaeval altar-slab. On the north of Walter Davys brass is a plainstone inscribed :-- 44 . . . Body of Thomas Scriven, A.M., who wasVicar of this Church near 15 year. . . . He livdbelived (sic) and Died lamented Octo . . . the29th Anno Dorn 1722, MtU 56°. Near this placealso was Buried Thomas Tnfunt (sic) son of ye abovesaidMr. Scriven by Mary his wife, Who Died ye 8th ofAugust, 1721, Aged above 3 years.
