owhat is now the Rudgwick Road and there divided, theeastern part going by Hook Street to Horsham and thewestern part by the old green lane at the back of HallHouse to Guildford and London, as shown on the mapand coloured brown. Apparently the first awakening of Loxwood from theslumbers of the past was the Act of Parliament passed in1757 for the purpose of making a turnpike road fromAlfold Bars in the County of Surrey to Saint MarysGate, in Arundel, in the County of Sussex. This is theroad which leads from Alfold, through Loxwood, overNew Pound Common and New Bridge, through Pul-borough and Bury to Arundel. This Act of Parliamentwas one of the earliest in Sussex, being the secondTurnpike Act ever passed for that county. The RightHonorable Arthur Onslow, Speaker of the House ofCommons, heads the list of the promoters, which containsmany well known Sussex names, of which I quote thefollowing: Lord George Lenox, Sir Cecil Bisshopp, SirJohn Shelley, Sir Charles Goreing, Walter Bartellott,

MiddletonOnslow, Lee Steer, the Mayor of Arundel for the timebeing, John King, senior, John King, junior, JohnLaker and John Napper, of Paplins. The tolls at the time were pretty heavy. A carriagedrawn by six horses paid Is. 6d., by four horses Is., bytwo horses 9d. and by one horse 6d. Horses paid 2d.,cattle Id. and sheep 2d. per score. Even the laws of the eighteenth century, as those of thepresent day, put the licensed victualler under manydisadvantages ; for instance, under this Turnpike Act noone who sold ale, wine or spirits was capable of holdingan office of profit. No plan of this road was deposited with the Clerk ofthe Peace, but evidently it did not take the line of theold road, because there is power in the Act to sell suchof the lands constituting the old road which should notbe required. In the Loxwood Turnpike Act there are provisionsmaking persons liable to perform Statute labour. Every-one who held lands
