ground rising \slightly to the east and west, so as to give it the appear-ance of having been either a twin barrow, or of havingbeen already opened in the centre. I determined, Itherefore, to cut a trench of sufficient width to embrace :both centres, should such be found. A trench 18 feet ;in width (Fig. 2) was accordingly commenced on thesouth side, digging down until the solid ground wasattained at 2 feet beneath the surface. This was deter-mined by the hardness and different colour of the soil, ias the tumulus here is not situated upon the chalk, but jupon a patch of tertiary formation overlying the chalk in Iseveral places on the northern slope of the hill. Abouta foot and a half of mould with very few stones was Ifound covering the barrow throughout the part ex-cavated ; then mould interspersed with numerous flintstones, and, at a depth of 3 feet 6 inches beneath thetop, the natural soil, consisting of hard clay of a lighterreddish colour without stones, as shown in the section ;

Digging on northwards towards the centre, we found a fragment of British pottery and a large flint scraper, 3; inches in length, 2 feet beneath the top at A, andI another small fragment of the same pottery at the samej depth, 3 feet to the north of the last. Digging down to the clay floor, two holes were found in it (B and 0, Figs. 1 and 2), one about 3 feet to the N.E. of theI centre, and another 8 feet to the S.W. Both were a foot! in diameter, and the same in depth. These holes, it ap- peared from their contents, had been formed for thej purpose of depositing objects belonging to the deceased, which might be of use to him in the future state. The contents of the first hole consisted, firstly, of a chippedI celt 4^ inches in length and 2 in width, without any trace of grinding. Thi
