y first to cast them flat, afterwards bend theminto the required circular form, and then solder them up,the edges which have been so joined are clearly seen onthe bowls at Edburton and Piecombe, where the patternsare botched or mutilated by it. On some examplesthe figures and ornaments are fac simihes, many times re-peated on the same work, and it is most likely in thesecases that a single one was first carved out of wood, andthen impressed on sand as often as required to completethe entire design. All the Sussex specimens wouldappear to be thus formed, and the practice was a commonone in the cast-iron works of the South of England, many Sussex fire-backs being composed of a shield ormonagram, repeated at intervals over the surface, agood instance of which may be seen on a casting belong-ing to Miss Alman, East Street, Horsham. It is now placed ona modern circular stem, and measures inches across the outside of the cornice22 inches inside diameter, the depth of the outer face is15 inches, and inside the bowl 13f inches ; the designis divided into four horizontal bands of ornament sur-rounding the cylindrical basin, the lowest is composedof fifteen circular-headed arches on moulded caps andthin flat pilasters, within each compartment so formed isa pattern of peculiar character, but by no means inele-gant, it has a central ring through which foliage scroll-work is interlaced, over this is a band of continuousfloriated ornament, with leav
