[edit]The latest New York sensation is that of the Amity place lying-in establishment. A Coroner's inquest is now being held on the body of Miss Susannah Lattin, from the evidence at which it appears that since January, twenty children have been born in the house and that they were all adopted out to strangers. No questions were asked and no record was kept of the children's whereabouts. When the number of new-comers became inconveniently large, an advertisement was inserted in the daily papers to the effect that free healthy children were ready for adoption, etc., at No 5 Amity place. In this manner the evidences of crime were put out of the way. Dr. Grindle made a regular charge of one hundred and fifty dollars for his services, but in the case of Miss Lattin was contented with two-thirds of that amount. He "does not profess" to produce miscarriages, but simply to afford "a quiet retreat for parties who have got themselves into trouble." The inquest has not yet concluded its labor.
