Summary
[edit]DescriptionSusan Danforth House, Clarence, New York - 20201001.jpg |
English: The Susan Danforth House, 10847 Main Street, Clarence, New York, October 2020. Though the approximate year of construction given by Clinton Brown Architecture in their intensive level survey of town historic resources (1810) almost certainly overestimates its age, the Danforth House is nonetheless a rare example of an intact Greek Revival-style residence in Clarence; the style is beautifully exemplified here by such features as six- and twelve-pane sash windows, a symmetrical façade framed by pilaster strips (echoed by a pilaster-framed front entrance), and a shallow-pitched roof with prominent gable returns suggestive of a broken pediment. New Hampshire-born Susan Danforth (1811-1882) appears to have been the house's first resident; she may have moved there after the death of her husband Francis, a Presbyterian minister, in 1854. |
