On 20 January 1957 Scott Base was established for NZ’s scientific research programme in the far south. The scientific bases of Scott Base (New Zealand) and McMurdo Station (USA) are the only permanently occupied human habitations in the area, though Amundsen–Scott South Pole Station is partially within the territory and dependent on logistics operations based in New Zealand.

Scott Base is located in the Ross Dependency region of Antarctica, defined by a sector originating at the South Pole, passing along longitudes 160° east to 150° west, and terminating at latitude 60° south. It covers 400,000 kilometres of land and 330,000 square kilometres of permanent ice shelf.

The Ross Dependency came under New Zealand government administration on 16th August 1923, and takes its name from Sir James Clark Ross. He is credited with discovering the Ross Sea, including the Ross Ice Shelf. Following his discovery of Victoria Land in 1841, James Clark Ross took possession of this territory, along with the surrounding sea, on behalf of Britain.

Taken by Colin Fink, the above images were transferred to Archives New Zealand from Land Information New Zealand. They come from a collection that captured Surveying in Antarctica, from 1964 to 1981. The image on the left is of Emperor Penguins at Cape Royds. The image on the right, taken from a Helicopter, is of Scott Base after the snow has receded.
