hed the vas deferens the operation is proceeded withas above. Thus far the operator has not concerned himselfwith the location of the testicle but relies wholly upon thevas deferens or gubernaculum, since when either of theseare recognized the testicle is virtually within his power. He thus proceeds upon the basis that he is not to Jj7id thetesticle for the reason that it is not lost but that it has de-finite relations and attachments which permit of certaindisplacements of the organ itself but not of its attachments.Having drawn the vas deferens out through the woundtension is exerted upon it which tends to cause the testicleto follow but sometimes the gland is too large to pass theinternal ring and the latter needs to be dilated some by 3 ^ 2 O ^ > n o a o rt a, -is «+-i O •»-,- V o a g •2 •S g^ o H a« -^ ^ S o a CO ^ -^S ^ .2 .2 O ^ ;3 >-. o .2 M ^ to >- Pi M .. 5 o « C enT3 ^ 5 S •- a; a o 2 I -5 a S3 ^ rt 3 4) o

CASTRATION OF CRYPTORCHID HORSES. 141 means of inserting an index finger in it or the testicleneeds to be guided through the opening. We have described herein one method of castrating acryptorchid horse where the cryptorchidy is due to an arrestin the development of the gland and of its descent. Thereare other methods employed which introduce variations atat each step, many operators making the incision over theexternal ring instead of near the median line and it is evenmore common for the operator to avoid opening the internalring and penetrating the peritoneal cavity somewhat in frontof and above it through the small obhque muscles. Whenone plan has been learned the variations are easil)^ applied. There are other causes of cryptorchidy in rare cases whichrequire a different procedure in order to extract the glandwhich varies with particular cases but the essentials for thediscovery and recognition of the testicle are the same. Prior to attempting the operation it is well to make arec
