Typed letter, black text on white paper.

Gettysburg National Military Park Gettysburg, Pennsylvania D66 January 16, 1963 Mr. Payne Williams Claire Towers Columbia, South Carolina Dear Mr. Williams: Replying to your letter of January 10, 1963, the “Rose Garden” tract of land, which you inspected, is situated east of West Confederate Avenue and is still in private ownership. The 264 acres of land presented to the Government by Mrs. W. Alton Jones is situated west of West Confederate Avenue and was not inspected by you. It would in face, not be a suitable location for a memorial as it is wet of the ridge and out of sight of the area where Sough Carolina troops were in action. May we suggest a site for the South Carolina memorial 300 yards sough of the observation tower where General Kershaw’s Brigade was camped the night of July 2, 1893. It would be located west of West Confederate Avenue on what is now a beautiful lawn area past whish all visitors pass on the regular Park tour. General Eisenhower’s farm land is about 100 feet west of this location. We are enclosing a map on which we have marked in red the location which we have suggested. If we can be of further service to you please feel free to write to us again. Sincerely yours, James B. Myers Superintendent Enclosure SGSollenberger/bmd
