Exhibition history Memories of India - 20 years in Trankebar. Governor general Peter Anker (1744-1832) painter and collector, Museum of Cultural History, 12 April 2002–11 August 2002 , cat. no.  4415
Inscriptions
English: Inscription in brown ink at the bottom of the band that is a part of the picture: Supremane Setty the famous Dubash in Tranquebar 1791
Notes
English: The picture is painted on a "plate" made of several sheets glued together, and this "plate" is glued to a thick ribbed sheet where the broad, grey margin with black outer edge has been drawn. The actual portrait is painted on one sheet, while the garland and plank wall are another sheet. Gold has been used on the aerrings. Probably the portrait was painted by an Indian artist, while Peter Anker painted everything round it. A dubash is a well-to-do Indian merchant. (Information from cat. no. 4415 p. 57.)
