English: Suppressing weeds, Potterton's allotments, Warwick The site is in the floodplain of the River Avon. The soil is a stony silt.
Gardening here is a constant battle against a grass weed. Some call it couch or twitch, implying Agropyron repens, but the flowers are nothing like. I say it's False Oat-grass (Arrhenatherem elatius), the tall grass of roadside verges which bleaches to pale straw colour in autumn. In any case, it's as bad as couch, and it comes with its mates, bindweed and creeping thistle. |
