Summary

[edit]
Description

The 1906 Pure Food and Drugs Act contained a provision mandating the supervised destruction of violative goods condemned by the courts. This photo, circa 1912, shows a lot of moldy raisins scheduled for destruction under the watchful eyes of U.S. Marshalls. Fines levied under the 1906 law were small. The inability to re-condition goods for resale often resulted in a more significant monetary loss.
