[edit]DescriptionSunstone Public Collection Area - 47910507671.jpg |
English: Signs and views from the Sunstone Public Collection Area in south-central Oregon, May 18, 2019. BLM photo: Lisa McNee
Sunstones, or feldspar crystals, were formed 14 million years ago when a volcano to the east at Steens Mountain erupted. The subsequent lava flow was covered by a lake that eventually dried up, revealing the lava rocks now called Oregon Sunstones. Most of the rocks are yellow in tint but they can be red or green, too. The public collection area is east of Lake Abert and requires miles of driving on gravel or unimproved roadways. Certain areas can be impassable in wet conditions, and due to the remoteness, visitors should be well prepared. Camping and stone collection are allowed within the BLM areas, but it is illegal to collect from nearby and adjacent private mines. The public collection area is marked by orange plastic posts. 📍 More information on how to visit: on.doi.gov/2M9x1vc Photos and map: bit.ly/2wb24vN |
