Summary
[edit]DescriptionSunshine Skyway Bridge (4937305329).jpg |
The Sunshine Skyway Bridge carries two lanes of vehicle traffic in each direction over the entrance to Tampa Bay in Florida. The north end is in St. Petersburg (Pinellas County), and the south end is in Terra Ceia (Manatee County). I took this photo from the southern approach, with St. Petersburg in the background. The bridge is 5.5 miles (8.8 km) long. The main span is 1,200 ft (368 m) long, and has clearance of 193 ft (59 m) over the water. Another source gives 4 miles (6.4 km) as the length of the bridge. The approaches are very long, and it may be an arbitrary judgment where the approaches end and the bridge begins. The original Sunshine Skyway Bridge was two 2-lane bridges, completed in 1954. A ship ran into one bridge in a storm in 1980, and destroyed the span. This new cable-stayed bridge was built between 1982 and 1987. The remaining bridge carried traffic until the new bridge was completed. |
