NPS/Patrick Myers Many visitors ask about the best places to access the wetland system west of the dunefield. Adjacent to the national park, San Luis Lakes State Wildlife Area protects a large portion of these wetlands, now open again after an annual closure for bird nesting season. Drive 15 minutes west of the visitor center on County Lane 6N, park at a trailhead on the north side of the large lake, then hike to smaller wetlands where many shore birds nest during summer months. Even in a dry year, these wetlands provide an oasis for wildlife and people!
