Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Sunset Lake is a large, subcircular hot spring in the Black Sand Basin of Yellowstone's Upper Geyser Basin. It has a diameter of 35 to 39 meters. It has one well developed runoff channel heading northeast toward Iron Spring Creek. In the past, some runoff drained southward into Rainbow Pool. Sunset Lake has occasional eruptions that range in size from small to about 35 feet high. Many years ago, an elk that had just disengaged from an elk fight pranced into Sunset Lake and died. In 1998, researchers measured the water temperature of Sunset Lake at 78° Celsius, with a pH of about 8.1.
