North andsouth stretches the rugged crest of theSierra. Seven thousand feet below you,to the east, lies desolate Mono Lake,and, if the day be clear, beyond Mono,the snow-vested ranges of the GreatBasin. To complete the alpine effect,gaze down the dizzy drop on the northside into Glacier Canyon to the spar-kling surface of a glacier. Nor must you climb each one of the 13,050 feet fromsea level. Leavingthe Tioga Road atDana Fork, which p^is about two miles ^from TuolumneMeadows, abound-ing in fine campsites, the trail takesyou up Dana Forkto the foot of themajestic mount.From here it climbsthe pass betweenMounts Dana andGibbs (anotherclimb for anotherday is Gibbs) andmakes a gradual as-cent to the summit. Startling, unbeliev-able colors catch and hold the eye: in thedistance, the immense purplish-brownash heap which is Cinder Cone, thedark forbidding volcanic cliffs whichare Chaos Crags, the two cool sap-phires which are Butte and Snag Lakesnestled in a setting of red and yellowlava beds. Turn to that closer mar\^el (it reallydeserves the side trip necessary for first-hand scrutiny), Bumpas Hell, where,into an inferno of bubbling, boiling,steaming geysers and sulphur springs,tumble and sizzle the melted snowsfrom Lake Helen. Rich is Lassens westfront m evidence of the continued ac-tion of sulphurous gases and steamwithin the crater; and on the northside, 800 feet below the summit, canbe seen traces of the old crater.
