Summary

[edit]
Description

Information board by the sundial on the Parnidis dune in Neringa, Lithuania:

The horizontal Sundial - a calendar, designed on tha basis of the traditional gnomonic (science of the sundial design) principles and invoking modern mathematical techniques, was built on the Parnidis Dune in 1995.

A decorative granite structure was erected on Parnidis Dune, emerging 53 meters above the sea level. This is an ideal place for this kind of sundial as an absolute mathematical horizon opens up from the Dune. It is possible to observe the Sun rising from the Lagoon and setting into the sea.

The stela sheds a shadow on the system of stairs, in which the steps are raising up to noon. One steps signifies one hour. The rows of lightest stones signify months, rows of grey stone equinoxes and solstices, and black stone the dark time of the day.

There is an obelisk in the centre of the square, decorated with the symbols from the traditional festivals and phonological events from the rune calendars. The obelisk, the height of which was reaching 12 meters, was broken down by the Anatoliy hurricane in 1999. The Sundial was designed by architect Ričardas Krištapavičius, sculptor Klaudijus Pudimas and Professor Dr Libertas Klimka.
