English: Tucson's new streetcar system is moving ever closer toward July, when officials expect the first passengers will begin using Sun Link. Federally-mandated testing however, must precede any public usage of the new system. The streetcars will have an improved system for ADA access, allowing wheelchairs to roll evenly from platform to car without having to roll up over the edge of a platform on the vehicle. The streetcar loading platform will slide out, and into a corresponding notch in the platform, to permit an even transition. A lot of automation and computerized control has gone into the new system, including a GPS locating system which will tell dispatchers exactly where any streetcar is at any given moment. A Train Wayside Communications system will integrate units with associated traffic light control boxes, to provide a safe transition for left turns across traffic. New illuminated traffic signals with white bars instead of the normal colors tell the operator when to hold and when to proceed. Closed circuit TV cameras will record all activity inside, as well as forward and reverse views of the roadway. Fares have not yet been determined.
