[edit]DescriptionSun 111119 3 C (49067856888).png |
The November 2019 Transit of Mercury. Composite mosaic of 5 image stacks showing the movement of Mercury during the final ~30 minutes of transit. The featureless Sun, free of sunspots, completely dwarfs the inner planet Mercury. The area of the Sun blocked by Mercury is 26.3 parts per million, or 0.002%. The relative size difference seen here is comparable to the limit of current technology for detecting exoplanets around other distant stars. For a distant observer watching our planet transit the Sun, Earth would appear only 2 times larger than Mercury in this image. Sun angular size: 32'18.63" (1938.63 arcseconds) Mercury angular size: 9.95" (arcseconds) Sun distance: 0.990 AU Mercury distance: 0.676 AU For disk and Mercury near edge: 2 panel mosaic, stacked best 100 out of 490 and 430 frames (recorded over ~20 seconds) For previous three Mercury positions: stacked best 100 out of 572, 597, and 589 frames 1/1000 ISO100 Atmospheric seeing: 3/5 Charlottesville, VA Camera: Canon T3i (stock / unmodified / unmodded DSLR) Telescope: Explore Scientific ED80 f/6.0 Apochromatic Refractor Filter: Baader AstroSolar Film ND5 Mount: Orion Sirius EQ-G Recorded in 3x video mode Processed with PIPP, AutoStakkert! 2, PixInsight, and Paint.NET |

This work has been released into the public domain by the author on Flickr, where the author has declared it as a "Public Domain Work" and tagged it with the Creative Commons Public Domain Mark.
|
||
The Public Domain Mark (PDM) is not a copyright license, but a symbol used to indicate that a work is in the public domain. When it is applied by the author or the copyright holder, community consensus has decided such works as being public domain in the US and countries where it is legally possible to release own work to the public domain. In the countries where this is not possible, the copyright status of the work remains undetermined.
| ||
If a file is tagged with Public Domain Mark by someone other than the author or the copyright holder, a more specific copyright tag such as one found at Commons:Copyright tags/General public domain must be applied. If this is your own work, please use {{Cc-zero}} instead.
