Theold mission—first erected on the west coast; hundred-year-old palms; the padres irrigationdam; Presidio hill, and such romantic reminders as Romonas Marriage Place, are butexamples of what has caused San Diego to be called the Mecca for tourists. SANTA BARBARA, best preserved of the missions, is the only one held always by thebrown-robed Franciscan brethren. Mission Santa Barbara is a shrine sought each yearby a multitude of visitors. In and about the city, as at Montecito and Miramar, are thewinter homes of many wealthy eastern people. DEL MONTE.
