Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Summer sea ice covered the Gulf of Boothia on July 20, 2023, when the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on board NASA’s Terra satellite acquired this true-color image. An area of open water is seen in the southwest as well as in the Fury and Hecla Strait, in the northeast.

The Gulf of Boothia sits in the remote regions of Canada’s Nunavut Territory. Nunavut encompasses most of the Canadian Arctic Archipelago, a network of high-latitude of islands facing the Arctic Ocean.

The open channels separating the islands of this archipelago have historically been covered by sea ice all summer, which allows polar bears to live on the ice year-round. According to Polar Bears International, this region is likely to provide one of the last refuges for polar bears and their sea-ice prey. They also warn that without action to halt global warming, even the furthest north habitats will lose their ice.
