Summary

[edit]
Description

Yiheyuan, or the Summer Palace, is located to the northwest of downtown on the No. 4 Ring Road.

Much of the area is the work of Empress Dowager Cixi who wasted the national treasury on such extravagances as a marble boat, even as the Western powers were descending on China like vultures.

The central feature of the complex is Lake Kunming, the man-made body of water seen here. It does generate some cool breeze, which is very welcome, because Beijing in summertime can be very hot. Sure, it may be a dry heat comparable to that in Los Angeles, but hot is still hot. The excavated soil from the creation of Lake Kunming was used to build Longevity Hill to the right.

Regardless of history, this place is very charming with picturesque Chinese architecture and landscaping.

Back in 2002, the only way to get here was via a cab ride or a guided tour, but now, there is easy subway service to the front gates.
