On this day on 1 February 1842 the first New Zealand Company immigrants for Nelson arrived on the Fifeshire. During the voyage nine people had died and 10 babies were born. In total 99 people were landed and they were soon followed by ships carrying more immigrants so that by mid-year several thousand people had settled in the town. Very few records of the voyage have survived but it was noted that Edmond Allen had received 25 pounds for his services as assistant to the surgeon and school master. Nelson was founded two years after the first New Zealand Company immigrants settled in Wellington. The site had been chosen for its port after New Zealand Company official William Wakefield arrived there searching for more land for the increasing numbers of settlers. It was soon evident that there was not enough land and subsequent exploration in the Wairau Valley led to violent confrontation between local Maori and pakeha surveyors.
