Summary
[edit]DescriptionSultani - Scale-down Model - Traditional Boat of Bengal - Howrah 2024-02-05 5500.jpg |
English: Sultani is made to carry cargo in the mouth of the Ganges. Its length is fifty to sixty feet and it carries commodities like vegetables, groceries, bricks, sands, cement etc. from Sundarbans to the mouth of the river. The technology used in making the boat is very different from any other boat type of Bengal. The plank joinery, shape of rudder, the structure of mast and the shape of sail are unique in style. So people do not consider it as a common boat. They call it ‘Boat’; instead of Nouka in local dialect. Note: This scaled-down model of a traditional boat from Bengal (Bangladesh and West Bengal) was crafted by Anupurba Banerjee and Swarup Bhattacharyya using wood, metal, and cloth. I express my appreciation to both of them for granting me permission to photograph and share their work on Wikimedia Commons for free use. -- BG. |
