ted station of her suitor, andsuggests that he plead his cause on the ground that love levels all rank. Sir Joseph acceptshis suggestion, but only succeeds in strengthening his rivals cause, as Josephine becomeseven more firmly resolved to wed Ralph. Dick Deadeye now reveals the planned elopement,and the Captain stops the couple as they are stealing away, demanding where they aregoing. Ralph confesses his love, which so angers Corcoran that he swears. Sir Joseph over-hears him and orders him to his cabin, but on being told the cause of the excitement,orders Ralph also to be confined. Little Buttercup, interrupting, reveals her secret and tellshow the Captain and Ralph were accidentally exchanged when both were infants. Where-upon Sir Joseph, revealing the crowning absurdity of Gilberts plot, sends for the seaman, giveshim command of the ship and nobly consents to his marriage with Josephine. The Captain,who now automatically becomes a common sailor, marries the happy Little Buttercup.
