Summary

[edit]
Description

c/n 02-05 Built in 1990 and flown by members of the Soviet National Aerobatic Team including champions Nikolai Timofeev, Sergei Boriak, Svetlana Kapanina and Elena Klimovich. After flying only 91.5 hours it was returned to Sukhoi and stored. In 1998 it was sold to Gerry Molidor, the U.S. National Advanced Aerobatics Champion of 1995, 1996 and 1997, who had also led the United States Advanced Aerobatic team to victory at the 1997 World Championships. He was aiming at the Unlimited World Aerobatic title and had the Sukhoi imported to the United States, U.S. registered and painted in colourful ‘Bud Light’ livery. He flew it in competitions and at airshows until September 2001, when his competitive career was ended by a G-induced eye injury at the 2001 U.S. National Championships. The Sukhoi was purchased by multinational brewing company Anheuser-Busch, for whom Molidor had previously been flown, and they donated the aircraft to the Smithsonian Institute in 2003. It is seen on display at the Steven F. Udvar Hazy Center as part of the National Air and Space Museum. Washington Dulles International Airport, Chantilly, Virginia
