Summary

[edit]
Description Built in 1887, this three-story Italianate-style flatiron building was designed by John Nader to house Suhr Bank. The building is clad in sandstone with a decorative arched entrance opening at the narrow end of the building with decorative red and white marble columns, a cornice, and brackets, rusticated doric pilasters on the first floor, storefront openings at the retail space on the first floor, one-over-one windows on the second and third floors with decorative headers, a marble panel above the third floor window at the narrow end of the building with the word “Suhr” etched into it, a cornice with brackets, and a parapet enclosing a low-slope roof. The building is one of several 19th Century buildings in the three-block “First Settlement” district on the east side of Capitol Square, which was the first area of Downtown Madison to see significant commercial development, with many of the district’s historic buildings surviving to the present day.
