Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Interlayered manganoan sugilite and braunite from the Precambrian of South Africa.

Manganoan sugilite is a rare, moderately complex silicate mineral (KNa2(Fe,Mn,Al)2Li3Si12O30 - potassium sodium iron manganese aluminum lithium silicate). This rock comes from South Africa's Kalahari Manganese Field, where sugilite has an intensely deep purple color. The material ranges from well crystallized to massive and cryptocrystalline. It forms part of a skarn, the result of metasomatism by hydrothermal fluids moving through sedimentary manganese oxide rocks of the Hotazel Formation. This sample has sugilite interlayered with black, massive braunite, a silicated manganese oxide mineral (Mn+2(Mn+3)6O8SiO4).

Stratigraphy: Hotazel Formation, uppermost Transvaal Supergroup, Paleoproterozoic, 2.2 to 2.3 Ga.

Locality: Wessels Mine, northwest of the town of Hotazel, ~80 kilometers northwest of the town of Kuruman, Kalari Manganese Field, Kalahari Desert, Northern Cape Province, northern South Africa
