Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Subway Street, Hull, East Riding of Yorkshire, England.
Derelict and fire damaged smokehouse, built in around 1890 for Gilchrist's fish factory between Subway Street and West Dock Avenue in West Hull. The workers in the foreground are busy in the back yard of The Hull Fishing Company Ltd which faces south-southeast onto Goulton Street. Smokehouses like this one were once a common sight in the Hessle Road area but nearly all of them have now gone. Sawdust fires were lit in the cellar and the smoke would rise through wooden racks on which the prepared fish were hung. The smokehouses had distinctive tall chimney pots with hooded cowls like these at the southern end of Essex Street in the Gipsyville: 1325111
