Summary

[edit]
Description

Despite British sovereignty being declared over Aotearoa New Zealand in May and June 1840, signings of te Tiriti o Waitangi continued.

William Hobson, now recovered from his stroke, travelled south to Waitemata Harbour with the Waitangi Sheet. On 5 July 1840 he attended a service at the Maraetai Mission Station, and made arrangements for a Treaty hui to take place on 9 July. While in Waitemata he also explored the Tāmaki River as a suitable site for settlement, but decided against it – choosing the present day area around Queen Street instead.

On 9 July Hobson and his entourage met with local rangatira on the shores of the Tāmaki River for the Treaty hui. The exact location is unknown, but is generally presumed to be Karaka Bay. Seven rangatira signed the Waitangi Sheet of te Tiriti o Waitangi, including Kupenga of Whakatiwai pā (near Tīkapa Moana or Firth of Thames), as well as other Ngāti Paoa rangatira. You can see their signatures here: www.nzhistory.net.nz/media/interactive/waitangi-treaty-copy

This undated Lands and Survey map shows the suburban land between and Auckland and Manukau, and country land in Tāmaki. Maraetai is located on the right, while Tāmaki River is in the centre of the map.

Note: The map can be dated to sometime between 1841 (after the purchase of the Kohimarama block from Ngāti Pāoa), but before Ngāti Whātua-o-Ōrākei land was purchased at Remuera in 1851. As Onehunga is not shown, a date before 1847 is likely.
