Summary

[edit]
Description

English: Submarine karst springKiveri”, east coast of the Peloponnese, Argolic Gulf. Precipitation water of the plateau (500-700 m) of the karstified limestone mountains of the Northeastern Peloponnese collects gradually in huge conduits, which run towards the Argolic Coast. The spring’s fresh water was barred already in 1972 by a 150 m long barrage. Gated weirs always maintain the fresh water table higher (since sea water is physically denser), to prevent the saline sea water from mixing with the fresh water. In the immense average annual discharge of 10 3/s there is only 0.3 to 2.5 gr/l Chloride! Along a ca. 15 km long water chute the fresh water is guided to the fertile Argos plain, where it replaces the irrigation by boreholes, whose water is very saline from excessive usage.
