Styracosaurus albertensis: "Spiked lizard" Late Cretaceous, North America

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Styracosaurus albertensis is a centrosaurine ceratopsian from the Late Cretaceous of North America. It grew to around 5.5 m in length, and could weigh up to 3 t. Typical of ceratopsians, Styracosaurus had a deep narrow beak accompanied by dental batteries for processing vegetation, and its head was adorned with a large frill. Styracosaurus had four to six long spikes extending from this frill, and a single nose horn, which may have been up to 60 cm long. Styracosaurus bone beds suggest that they may have lived in large groups or herds. The abundance of skull specimens reveals juvenile to adult growth stages, as well as morphological differences between individuals.
