Opis vrste

D.t. 19–22 cm. Rasprostranjen je u celoj Evropi osim Iberijskog i krajnjeg južnog dela Apeninskog i Balkanskog poluostrva, u Maloj Aziji, delovima Bliskog Istoka i zapadnom delu centralne Aziji. Veštački je naseljen u Severnu Ameriku, južnu Afriku, Australiju i Novi Zeland. Severne populacije se zimi pomeraju ka jugu. Staništa su mu otvoreni i mozaični ekosistemi sa drvećem uključujući poljoprivredna područja, gradska i seoska naselja. Gnezdi se u dupljama u drveću, zemljanim odsecima ili ljudskim objektima. Hrani se insektima i drugim beskičmenjacima, semenjem i bobičastim plodovima. Okuplja se u velika selidbena jata koja redovno broje više hiljada jedinki. Evropska populacija je u umerenom opadanju, verovatno zbog gubitka pogodnih staništa usled intenziviranja poljoprivrede. U Srbiji se gnezdi promenljiva populacija od 300.000–600.000 parova (Puzović et al 2003).
