Description |
English: Notes in inventory: Tacoma, Wash. American bald eagle, 8 feet from tip to tip of wings, 33 1/2 inches from crown of head to tip of tail. Shot on Chas. Gould fruit farm, Detroit, Wash. Detroit is a vanished town near Grapeview, on the west shore of Cases Inlet, in east central Mason County. It boomed in 1889 with Detroit Land & Improvement Company, backed by Ladd & Tilton Bank of Portland. There were plans to build a portage railroad between Cases Inlet and Hood Canal, but the town did not develop. The post office name was changed to Grapeview when it moved a short distance to the south. The project was to become as big as its Michigan namesake. PH Coll 291.157
