We get therefore tothis, that there has been a gradual evolution of designs based on the pakwaelement, along the lines indicated, and that at this stage the svastika appears.Or, putting this more accurately, at this point in the evolution of thediapers, a new and rather fascinating figure appeared, which having attractedthe attention of the devout, was taken out of the diaper, and accorded aspecial symbolic meaning of its own. Possibly the svastika has been imaginedbefore its spontaneous appearance in the diaper, that this was, so to speak, itssecond incarnation ; but the suggestion which I have made that this is in factits origin has somewhat stubborn facts to support it.
