Description

South Dakota has over 650 different soil types. In this photo, NRCS Soil Scientist Kent Cooley explains soil types and their significance to local high school students.

On April 28, 2015, the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) staff in Dupree, SD, hosted the Dupree High School biology class for a field trip. The teacher and 23 students met the NRCS crew at a location owned by Bev Birkeland and Lawrence Woodward, which had three different land uses: range, crop, and wildlife. There they were introduced to NRCS technical specialists: Kent Cooley, Soil Scientist, Rapid City, and Ryan Beer, Range Management Specialist, Bison.

The students were divided up into three groups that rotated every 40 minutes through the three land uses. Soil Scientist, Kent Cooley, provided a basis lesson in soils, drilled a core to show different soil characteristics, and showed the impacts of erosion with the Rainfall Simulator. Ryan Beer, RMS, taught students about grass species, grazing management, and water infiltration rate.

Additional NRCS’ers assisted with the event. Ramon Birkeland and David Pesicka, both at the Dupree Office, took each group on a wildlife walk that discussed a variety of topics from different habitats, local wildlife, and shelter that farmers and ranchers provide through good management of habitat along with their agricultural operation. Also assisting were Dustin Jewett and Nate Grueb of Dupree. Drinks and snack were provided by the Ziebach Co. Conservation District.
