Description

"Student loan debt is now the second largest consumer debt in the nation, with an estimated 40 million Americans, including nearly one million Wisconsin borrowers, owing $1.2 trillion.

Why is student loan debt exploding? How is this debt impacting our communities? These questions were addressed at a press conference on Monday, September 8, at Milwaukee Area Technical College, 700 W. State St.

Appearing at the event was award-winning director Andrew Rossi, whose new film Ivory Tower explores the root causes of skyrocketing college tuition.

Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett discussed the impact of student loan debt on the City of Milwaukee. Scot Ross, Executive Director of One Wisconsin Now, outlined possible solutions.

Sharing their personal stories about how student loan debt has affected them were UW student and U.S. Army veteran Saul Newton and MATC faculty and students.
