Title
English: Studebaker roadster and two motorcycles, Bothell, ca. 1914
Description
English: In the early part of the 20th century, roads outside larger cities were usually unpaved, with deep ruts and rocks. Sometimes roads were surfaced with gravel and crushed stone, but ruts still appeared and made driving tricky. In 1911, the town of Bothell experimented unsuccessfully with using a new kind of tar as a paving material. The road was repaved the following year after too many vehicles got stuck in the tar.

In this photo, taken around 1914, two motorcyclists and an driver try to drive through the deep ruts in a road near Bothell.
