Summary

[edit]
Description

Stromatolites from the Eocene of Utah, USA. (~5.9 centimeters across at its widest along the base)

Stromatolites are layered structures built up by mats of cyanobacteria (= blue-green bacteria, often incorrectly called “blue-green algae”). Stromatolites are fairly common in portions of the shallow-water marine & nonmarine fossil record, but they also occur in a few modern localities (e.g., Shark Bay along coastal Western Australia).

The examples shown here grew during the Eocene in an ancient lake in Utah.

Stratigraphy: Green River Formation, Eocene

Locality: unrecorded site (likely a roadcut) in Utah, USA
