Summary
[edit]DescriptionStromatolite in metadolostone (Nash Fork Formation, Paleoproterozoic, 2.06-2.08 Ga; Rt. 130 roadcut across from Miner's Cabin Trailhead, Medicine Bow Mountains, southeastern Wyoming, USA) (15201947482).jpg |
Partially silicified stromatolitic metadolostone - structurally tilted beds of the Nash Formation Formation in the Precambrian of Wyoming, USA. Stratigraphy: Nash Formation, upper Libby Creek Group, Snowy Range Supergroup, middle Paleoproterozoic (2.06 to 2.08 Ga); metamorphism at 1.76 to 1.78 Ga, during the late Paleoproterozoic. Locality: roadcut along Rt. 130, across from Miner's Cabin Trailhead parking lot, a little west of Libby Flats, southeast of the Snowy Range, Medicine Bow Mountains, southeastern Wyoming, USA. Stromatolites are large, layered structures built up by mats of cyanobacteria. Stromatolites vary in appearance, ranging from slightly wrinkled horizontal laminations in sedimentary rocks to low mounds to prominent mounds to columnar structures and other forms. Stromatolites are most common in the Proterozoic fossil record. They are scarce today, but famous modern examples occur at Shark Bay, Western Australia. |
