Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Strokestown - Park House - Distant courtyard view The greatest Palladian mansion in County Roscommon, built in 1730s for Thomas Mahon. It incorporates a 17th century tower house. The house remained in family hands until 1979, when a major restoration began. By 1979, the estate had dwindled from 30,000 acres to just 300 acres. A Famine Museum commemorating the 1840s famine is set in the stable yards. Major Denis Mahon, a callous landlord during famine times, was murdered after forcing two-thirds of the starving peasantry off his land via eviction and other means.
