35 mm slide; color. Scientific Classification: Kingdom: Animalia; Phylum: Chordata; Class: Mammalia; Order: Carnivora; Family: Mustelidae; Genus: Mephitis; Genus species: Mephitis mephitis. Animal characteristics: Head-Body Length: 68 cm; Weight: 1.5-3 kg; Identification: The striped skunk is easily distinguished by its black coat with white stripes forking down the back and tail. It also has a white patch on its head; Habitat: Semi open country, woods, grasslands, suburbia; Diet: Omnivore: mice, eggs, insects, berries, carrion; Reproduction: The striped skunk mates in February. Gestation lasts 62-66 days, after which 3-9 young are born (May through June); Social Structure: The skunk is not a social animal, although in winter several skunks will sometimes occupy a den; Behavior: This skunk's activity takes place mostly at night; Status: No special status; Interesting Facts: Striped skunks are the most common skunk species. Their foul-smelling spray temporarily stops the victim's breathing. The distinct black and white markings along a skunk's back serve as a warning display.
