Street sign in Saltdal marking Blodveien "the Blood Road"

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Blodveien is a stretch of road northeast of Rognan in Saltdal in Nordland that was built by prisoners of war during World War II. The road was a new parcel of national road 50 between Rognan and Langset on the east side of Saltdalsfjorden. The specific incident that gave the road its name was a cross of blood that was painted on a rock wall in June 1943. The blood came from a prisoner was shot by a Wehrmacht soldier, and the cross was painted by his brother.
