Description
English: Stretcher bearers, Western Front, during World War I. Stretcher bearers in a roadway. Most are bearing armbands with the letter 'SB' for 'stretcher bearer', one has a red cross instead. Many of the men look strained; they saw the worst of injuries, often working in the most dangerous of conditions.

Men who were badly wounded in the course of an attempted advance might lie where they fell for hours, often until dark fell and the stretcher bearers could attempt to look for survivors.
