Title |
Strap end |
||
Description |
English: Copper-alloy strap-end with hollow end (also known as a ‘box chape’), now missing its terminal. The hollow end has a front and bevelled sides cast together, and a sheet backplate held on with solder and with four iron rivets, one in each corner. The front of the hollow end is decorated with what appears to be a clumsy attempt at a letter M; there is a central stem and two curving side elements, but they are all close together with no space between. On either side are three or four vertical columns of triangular punchmarks, not very neatly applied; all is contained within an engraved line to either side. The M is the right way up when the strap-end is held with the hollow end to the bottom and the missing terminal to the top. Continuing to hold it this way, above the hollow end is a solid part which begins with an area decorated with two broad transverse grooves. Above this is a concave waisted area, then a rounded transverse bar, then the break, which is old and worn. The maximum width is 26 mm and the surviving length is 34 mm; the maximum thickness is 6.5 mm. It weighs 18.3g and has a yellowish white-metal coating. These strap-ends, sometimes called ‘lyre-shaped’, date to the 15th century. |
