Text Appearing Before Image:
The oldest church in the islands contains some blocks of coral in itswalls that were brought from old heathen temples. ests on the mountains, and were dragged tothe place by long lines of men and women. When the logs were hewn and ready, twolines of men and women would take firm holdof long ropes fastened to them, ready to pullas hard as they could. One man was theleader. When he called out, Grasp theropes! Bow the head! Blister the hands!Go! Sweat! away they went, singing andshouting, over rocks and through mud andacross streams, stopping for nothing. Then the leader would shout: Halt! Drop!Drag ropes! Rest! and they would all stopto get their breath, ready for the next pull. (7i)
Text Appearing After Image:

Somecame from Japan, and some from China, andsome from America, and some from otherplaces. Now there are more of these peoplesliving in the islands than of the Hawaiiansthemselves. They have schools and churchesand cities and street cars and automobiles. Twenty years ago the people living on theislands said, We would like to belong to theUnited States. So the islands were annexed,or taken into the family of the United States,as a sort of younger sister. Nearly thirty-five years ago two men, Mr.Scott and Mr. La Rue, came to the HawaiianIslands to tell the people the good news thatJesus is soon coming. Elder William Healeycame
