Summary

[edit]
Description

c/n 1 Built in 1938 by Tom Story of Portland, Oregon, and financed by Lee Eyerly, this homebuild light aircraft was based on the enchantingly named ‘Leslie Long’s Low Wing Longster’. It was originally named “Wimpy”, but was purchased by George Bogardus after WW2 and was renamed “Little Gee Bee”. Bogardus flew the aircraft from Oregon to Washington D.C. in 1947, 1949 and 1951 to convince authorities that homebuilt aircraft could be safe, reliable and able to travel long distances. After this the regulations on building such aircraft were relaxed and the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) was formed. The “Little Gee Bee” was restored by Portland Chapter 105 of the EAA in 2005 and was then donated to the Smithsonian Institution. It is seen on display at the Steven F. Udvar Hazy Center as part of the National Air and Space Museum. Washington Dulles International Airport, Chantilly, Virginia
