Summary
[edit]DescriptionStorrs Temple, Windermere - geograph.org.uk - 547626.jpg |
English: Storrs Temple, Windermere. Storrs Temple is on its own little jetty jutting into Windermere from a promontory which is home to the 97719. Both hotel and temple were built between 1808 and 1811 by the architect Joseph Gandy (1771-1843) for Sir John Legard. This temple is now in the care of the National Trust, but by the looks of it, it is currently not open to the public as there was a fence visible across the jetty as we drifted past. The plaque facing us in this photo is inscribed with the name "NELSON" while ones not visible commemorate Admirals Howe, Duncan and St. Vincent.
It is a registered War Memorial - see http://www.ukniwm.org.uk/server/show/conMemorial.4240/fromUkniwmSearch/1 so that's how I'll categorise it, as I don't think it was ever really a temple. |
