The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard NASA’s Terra satellite captured a true-color image of the near-stationary storm on June 17.

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: A strong storm system sat over the southcentral United States in mid-June 2017, bringing moderate rain and heavy wind to the region before slowly moving to the northeast.

The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard NASA’s Terra satellite captured a true-color image of the near-stationary storm on June 17. At that time, the center of the system hung over eastern Oklahoma and western Arkansas.

While the storm brought rain to the region, the biggest problem proved to be wind. According to a local Arkansas news outlet, 5newsonline (KFSM), the storm dropped less than 2 inches in Fayetteville and less than an inch in Fort Smith, Arkansas, but the wind downed trees, damaged a building, and caused road closures in the towns. The Muskogee Phoenix reported severe wind – possibly a tornado – damaged Webbers Falls, Oklahoma. A power line was down on a bridge leading into town, and several homes were damaged badly enough to be unlivable. The Red Cross was called in to help evaluate the situation. Oklahoma Gas and Electric (which serves part of Oklahoma as well as Arkansas) reported 2,300 customers lose power, as well as many customers of Lake Region Electric Cooperative and Cookson Hills Electric Cooperative. Gas lines were also damaged in Webbers Falls.
